RE: Walker BTM 21470 muffler

I have it on a 2003 7.3L F350. I was worried about the noise as well. It does change the noise slightly, though at the speed you mentioned, there is no increase inside cap. I am quite often told that I must have chipped my truck due to its sound, but I have only done the BTM and the AES Ford intake. I would describe the noise as a little more whine or whistle to it, maybe due to the increased air flow.

Want to Feel Better...Check See My Bad Luck

My family has really hit a string of bad luck resulting in the cancellation of numerous trips this year. First the rear end went out in my wife's Ford Expy so we got that fixed and traded it in on a Honda Civic for better mpg. Came home and next morning car had flat. Got that repaired. Soon to follow I developed a kidney stone that was stuck in top of urethra. 2 weeks of litho and many ER trips. Coming home from on of the Dr visits a lady hit our new Civic in rear and pushed us into car in front of us at stop light. $9000 dollars damage! So we get rental car. 2 days later, rental is in garage and a shelve falls and hood of rental is damaged. While this was happening my wife and son developed strept throat. So to relax I go on my computer to see what my fellow campers are doing and my PC crashes. Hours of work and I get that going again. Next day I go to cut grass and the spindle bearing on my John Deere goes bad and my Stihl blower will not start. Really, I am not kidding on this stuff!!!4 days ago we hear a funny noisy in the den, only to find water dripping thru ceiling due to clogged drain line on AC unit. And today I sit home with my 16 year old dog who had a softball size tumor removed from his hind quarter.
So relax and enjoy your camping, because someone else is having it a little worse. The sad thing is, I know someone out there is having it even worse than me. Be thankful we are here and make the best of it.

RE: Using a Bed Slider

I was looking at the Bedslider and the Joey Bed. I checked my local Craigslist and found a Joey Bed that someone was selling for $300. Lucky for me it fit my truck, and it works great. I am tickled I bought one, and cheap. I used to put my firewood on back and it made the rest of the bed unusable as I too have camper shell. Now the firewood goes to the back and the Joey Bed pulls out as if npthing is on it. My advice, check Craigslist, then if you cannot find one, bite it and get a new one. Joey Bed holds a little more if my memory serves me. Warning though, you will have to spend some time putting this together, which fortunatly I avoided since it was already being used.
If interest send me an email and I will get you a few pictures.

Sometimes the obvious answer stares you in the face and you do not see it! I have Treks and never thought of removing the tires, so thanks SoCal for waking up my sleeping brain.

RE: Tow Vehicle Nightmare- First Long Distance Trip

I drive a FORD F350 PSD with the 7.3L diesel. I was told when I was looking to stay away from any 6.o diesel as they are prone tp problems. That was the best advice I was given on my search for that famous sooty power!

Front Hitch Question

I am thinking of adding a hitch to front of my 2003 F350 truck, primarily to put a bike carier on. Tired of the hitch carrier blocking my entrace to the bed of my truck (I have the bike carrier that attaches to hitch and still allows towing).
My concern is how much affect will this have on my trucks cooling ability. There obviously going to be a certain amount of air flow reduction, but is it going to affect engine/transmission temperature?

RE: What is killing the RV Industree?

Just camp as long as you can. If you desire and can afford to camp, then now is a great time. Parks are not quite as crowded, but still pretty full. Every industry goes through contractions and expansion. It is an inevitable part of a capitalist society. So just camp, relax, and try to forget about your problems.
As for drilling for oil; that ain't the answer. We need to find alternative energy sources to replace our dependence on a dwindling resource. By the eay, we humans cannot be trusted to protect the earth. All it takes is one idiot like the captain of the Exxon Valdez, to make a large negative impact on the environment.
Camping is the only true stress free thing this strong Type A personailty can do.

RE: Smokies NC side

Can't tell you about a RV park, however, would like to say Elkmont, our favorite, or Cades Cove would be the best choices to stay at in the park.
Dave
Loved Cades Cove area. That is my vote!

RE: Grey's Point Topping, VA

We have stayed at Greys Point and Beth Page. Greys Point is the better of the 2, however both campgrounds are geared to a lot of permanent campers. Now most of these are very nice setups, but obviously they get all the water front sites. We do not go back now because they converted quite a few sites we used to like to permanents. We still like site #1 right behind the store. It's only draw back is the road traffic, but both campgrounds are infamous for the golf carts and lack of control (kids driven them all night). They do have a nice pool, and if you have a boat the ramp is nice.

RE: When to Replace Hitch or WD Parts

Jimfromvirginia:
It may be the lock washers that are beneath the cam adjustment nuts that you heard need to be periodically replaced.
You are right. Once I read your post my old memory came to life! The lock washers are exactly what I had heard need to be replaced periodically. Just do not know what "they" mean by periodically?

RE: Holding Tanks Treatments...

I do not use chemicals. Black tanks are "holding" tanks, not "septic systems", so break down of solids is difficult in a short time.
Anyway, we have absolutely no odors from either tank and this is how we do it.
When we leave for camping we add water softener, and 1 scoop of powdered detergent. There is 5 gallons of water in the black tank as we NEVER leave it dry (see dumping later). While driving the detergnt and softner act as a desurfactant and basically lubricate the tank on all sides so that stuff will not stick. Once at the campground, when using toilet, we always flush in lots of water. It just seems really hard for us to fill our blank tank, so we do not worry about using too much water unless boondocking. The tank is never dumped until very close to full. If we must use a dump station, we fill tank with water before disconnecting, or at dump station before dumping. We flush using the Flush King which is quick and easy. Once clean, we add about 5 gallons of water for the ride home, whichlinks back to our starting point.
Other things we have done is add wind vanes to top of each tank vent to allow the venturri effect as Johnny T previously noted. Once in a while we add 1 cup of bleach to both tanks. Don ot over do the bleach, because it is tuff on seals.
As for gray tank, we just add the softener and detergent and a little bit of water, since we do seem to fill grey and galley way to fast! The key is to NEVER leave any tank completely dry. Always try to cover the bottom of any tank with water.
For the record, all of our guages work.

When to Replace Hitch or WD Parts

OK...been towing with my hitch and Reese Dual Cam sway control for years now. Curious when others are replacing these parts, or how to tell when they need replacing. I have heard the large nuts on the cam adjustment should be replaced periodically, but curious what others are doing, if anything?

RE: re-caulking

I contacted the manufacturer of my TT roof (not the TT manufacturer) for another concern, and in the conversation caulking came up. My TT is a 2006 and he said I should not be concerned for the first 3 years under most conditions and with normal cleaning. By the way cleaning is done with warm soap and water only according to him. Anyway, after 3 years, annual close inispections are warranted. ANY, suspicious aeas should be completely removed and recaulked. As the previous post said, do not pile it up. The height of the caulking is not what keeps things from leaking, but a bound between the caulk bead and the surface of the TT. A small bead corectly placed will do a better job, will be easier to inspect, will show cracks better, and in the end will be easier to remove.
Hope this helps.

We use the weighted bean bags so that we can angle it for my co-pilot wife, or for myself. Als like the flexibility of tilting to maximize visibility in various lighting conditions. However, I like hat you did and it is certainly another great option.

Anybody use either the Joey Bed, Bedslide, or similar slide out product for the bed of a truck? I am tired of the unused space in the front of the truck bed under my camper shell. Any products or ideas appreciated.
